Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, is reportedly evaluating Texas as the location for a manufacturing and logistics project valued at nearly $1 billion. According to industry sources, the most serious candidate sites are now concentrated within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.
The proposed project would require approximately 100 acres of land and is expected to create around 2,200 jobs over the next five years, signaling a long-term operational commitment.

A Major Long Term Bet on Central Texas
From what has been shared publicly so far, the project is clearly structured around two core components:
a 20-acre manufacturing facility and an 80-acre logistics center. Both sites are required to fall within 15 miles of Interstate 35, a constraint that significantly narrows the pool of viable locations.
Placing manufacturing and logistics side by side is not a casual decision. It requires not only large, contiguous land parcels, but also reliable transportation infrastructure, a steady supply of engineering and technical talent, and a metro area capable of supporting long-term industrial coordination. These requirements help explain why Austin has emerged as a leading contender.

It is also worth remembering that this is not Blue Origin’s first chapter in Texas. Nearly two decades ago, the company established a launch facility in Van Horn, West Texas, which has since hosted 36 successful New Shepard launches since 2015, including a high profile all female mission in April 2025..
Texas has therefore long served as a core operational base for the company. Extending manufacturing and logistics operations into Central Texas appears more like a logical next phase in an already established footprint.
Why North Austin Stands Out
After Texas’ economic development agencies and Opportunity Austin issued a formal request for information (RFI), multiple cities across the Austin metro quickly submitted site proposals.
Among the candidate regions, Williamson County has drawn particular attention. At least six potential sites within the county are reportedly under consideration, underscoring how aggressively the north side is competing for the project.

Over the past several years, North Austin has gradually developed into a corridor for advanced manufacturing and aerospace activity. Along the US-183 axis, from Cedar Park to Liberty Hill, a growing cluster of aerospace-related companies has taken root, including Firefly Aerospace, headquartered in Cedar Park.
The region is also home to the Central Texas Spaceport Development Corporation, now Texas’ sixth designated spaceport authority, created to support long-term aerospace infrastructure and industry development.

Signals from the State
While the Texas Governor’s Office has not explicitly confirmed negotiations with Blue Origin, an official statement emphasized that “Texas has the most powerful economy in America: No. 1 for the most new jobs, No. 1 for economic development, and ranked as the Best State for Business for 21 years.” The state reiterated its commitment to working with companies seeking to expand their operations in Texas.
Whether Blue Origin ultimately selects North Austin remains to be seen. But the broader implication of this development is already clear.

Austin’s competitive landscape is evolving. The conversation is no longer just about attracting companies, it is increasingly about whether a region can support an entire industrial value chain, from production to logistics to long-term workforce needs.
North Austin, particularly the areas surrounding the I-35 and US-183 corridors, continues to surface in these high-level decisions. As aerospace, semiconductor, and advanced manufacturing investments layer onto the same geography, shifts in regional value often occur well before pricing fully reflects them.
